The office has not allowed public access since making the decision to close the public counter in 2017. All documents must now be filed online or physically via the documentation office in Auckland.

The office has about 180 staff (as of September 2023) consisting of Head of Operations Hamilton, Visa Operations Managers, Senior Administration Coordinator, Practice Leads, Immigration Managers, Technical Advisers, Senior Immigration Officers and Immigration Officers.

In 2019, a compliance officer at Hamilton Immigration New Zealand, who was also a Hamilton city councillor, was found to have made controversial remarks about refugees in Europe, which some people thought were racist.
He did clarify later that he had directed his comments at those responsible for the terrorist attacks in France. He had to resign from his position at INZ as a result.
