We are looking for a technician at beginner to intermediate level to join our team in Onehunga, Auckland. This full-time permanent role is a great opportunity for someone looking to develop or kick-start their career, as on-the-job training is provided.
A triaxial laboratory technician works in a geotechnical engineering lab and conducts tests to measure the properties of soil and rock within our specialist triaxial laboratory, this includes tests such as triaxial compression, permeability, direct shear, one-dimensional consolidation, cyclic triaxial, etc.
The work will be hands-on and physical and therefore requires a reasonable degree of physical strength. The nature of the work is likely to require early starts, late finishes, and occasional overtime.
Skills and Experience:
Ideally you will have a degree or diploma in Geography, Physical Science, Electronics, Mechanical, Physics or similar. Ability to lift items weighing 15kg+ regularly. Experience with basic hand tools, and repair and maintenance of equipment. An understanding of soil mechanics, for example a basic understanding of soil behaviour under stress would be beneficial. Computer literacy: Familiarity with using computers for data entry, spreadsheets, and potentially lab-specific software. Willingness and ability to pick up new skills and knowledge quickly.
Technical Skills:
Experience operating triaxial shearing apparatus would be beneficial, including preparing soil and rock samples for testing, conducting the tests according to set procedures, and collecting and recording data. Experience testing test data, interpreting results, and generating reports. Familiarity with geotechnical software: experience with specialized software to analyze data and generate reports. Knowledge of health and safety protocols: Working in a lab environment requires following safety protocols for handling equipment and potentially hazardous materials like soil samples.
Power Skills:
Accuracy and attention to detail: Triaxial tests involve precise measurements and following procedures meticulously. Neat, tidy and well organised: These attributes ensure an efficient and safe laboratory. Problem-solving skills: The technician may need to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions or unexpected test results. Communication skills: Being able to communicate test results clearly in written reports and verbally to engineers is important. Teamwork: Collaboration with engineers and other lab technicians is essential.
